Today was the first day to electronically file taxes, and according to tax advisors it's a good idea to get it done early. Some of the paperwork shuffle that comes just before April 15th can be avoided if you file your taxes now. You can now electronically file with the IRS, which can help get you your refund quicker. "Some people are getting their money now because they've already been pre-approved to walk out of here with a check, so it just depends," says Master Tax Advisor with H&R Block, Cleta Mills. Kathy Deckard was filing her taxes today, and she said, "The reason why we come now is it comes in handy at this time of year." There are a couple new items to consider this year when you're filing your taxes. One concerns the Alternative Minimum Tax. "They are going to turn loose the clients that have AMT to electronically file by February 11th, is what we were informed," said Mills. The other item is the definition of a child ! has changed. Mills says, "Before, the IRS said if boyfriend and girlfriend lives together, the girlfriend has two children, boyfriend can't claim those children. Now, they can as long as they provided them with a home for the whole entire year." If people don't file their taxes themselves, they need to provide their tax advisor with social security numbers for the whole family, a picture I.D., the date of birth of all their children, and income and expenses if they own a small business. The deadline is still April 15th at midnight. Some employers are allowing their employees to access their W-2 forms online, which makes filing, and potentially receiving a refund, even quicker.
