San Marino Woman Is Victim of Apparent Follow-Home Robbery

A San Marino woman was brutally assaulted by three men in the driveway of her Lorain Rd. home late Monday evening in what Police Chief John Schaefer is calling a strong arm, follow-home robbery.
Upon their arrival, SMPD officers contacted a female resident who reported she had closed and left her place of employment in South Los Angeles at about 10:30 p.m., taking with her the night's receipts. When the victim drove into her driveway, she was confronted by three male suspects who assaulted her and wrestled away from her a bank bag that contained cash and credit card receipts.
Once in possession of the bank bag, the three suspects ran to an older white, four-door sedan that was parked on Lorain Road and fled. The vehicle was last seen turning southbound onto San Gabriel Blvd.
The three suspects are described as male blacks in their early twenties.
"In this crime, the victim believed she was being followed," Schaefer told The Tribune. "In addition to whatev! er safety precautions you might use when transporting money or closing your business, if you suspect you are being followed, please call the police or drive to the police station at 2200 Huntington Drive instead of driving straight home. People need to take due caution. Follow-home robberies are very common. If you own a business, you need to take extra caution."
Schaefer also reported two separate attempted residential burglaries in which a suspect broke a window but failed to enter the residences, according to police reports. The incidents took place in the 500 block of Huntington Drive and the 1800 block of Carlisle. Schaefer did not believe the break-ins were the work of a "hot-prowl" burglar who has hit several homes in the north side of San Marino.
"The modus operandi is different," Schaefer said. "The hot-prowl guy has not hit in San Marino since December 1. I really think it is because people are really paying attention and keeping valuables out of sight. Th! e Neighborhood Watch is really helping. People knowing that th! ey need to pay attention is helping."
Schaefer also said that the Land Rover repair shop at the west end of San Marino on Huntington Drive was also hit Sunday when a burglar broke a window, pried open a register and absconded with an unspecified amount of cash.
