Holmes and Washington County Impact

Walton County won't be the only community to enjoy the new airport's benefits.

People in Holmes and Washington counties are anticipating their own economic impacts.

Several communities are already experiencing some changes.

An economic boom from the construction and completion of the airport is expected to spring up along Highway 20 and Highway 79.

Already, new businesses are interested in the area.

"In Ebro, we have one company planning on opening up in the area," says a local official.

To accommodate the increase in traffic on Highway 79, construction is underway to widen the roadway.

Washington County Resident Bill Dobbins says the move will force many people to sell their homes, land, and businesses to the state.

"We?re going to lose a business that we have well established," said Holmes Co. Resident Thomas Cook, who says he will also have to relocate. "They will put the right-a-way just to the right of my shop; ! it will completely take up my house and my shop."

Even though the new airport will cause the Cook family to lose their 100 year old home and their antique business, they say it's worth the loss. "I've always been pro progress because I?m only here for a short time,? Cooks says. ?I feel like the county has to develop and progress.?

That progress is expected to change the face of the community.

"We anticipate a lot of new businesses to come up along Highway 79 and 20 and in the southern portion of Washington County and it will become the major intersection for those doing business with the airport," officials said on Thursday.

Most of the changes won?t be seen for a few years.

Another major area of interest is Highway 79 and I-10. Officials say they expect a lot of development along that corridor.
